myFM News presents ‘Ask a Cop’, brought to you by Mighty Green Cleaners.
Listeners submitted questions for Halton Police Constable Ryan Anderson.
A resident asked about hate crimes and what they should do if they come across one. There have been several recent hate crimes in Georgetown, specifically schools, as well as in Burlington and Oakville. Milton also had a swastika spray-painted onto a police building.
Constable Anderson says you should call the Halton Police non-emergency line.
He adds that it’s important to not touch the scene, no matter how badly you’d like to see it cleaned up. An investigation will be required and will involve collecting evidence and any fingerprints.
Another listener asked about rewards and how they may impact police investigations. Locally, a four-month-old puppy was inadvertently taken while sleeping in the back seat of a stolen truck. In a somewhat similar international story, artist Lady Gaga had two of her three french bulldogs stolen when her dog walker was confronted and shot. While the dogs in both stories were eventually returned, it was made public knowledge that Gaga had offered a reward for the safe return of her dogs. Constable Anderson says that in Canada, rewards are most often provided by Crime Stoppers. He adds that in cases like Lady Gaga offering a reward for her stolen dogs, the suspects might be charged with extortion.
Regarding the rewards given by Crime Stoppers, they depend on the severity of the crime, the quality of the tip, and other factors to determine how much would be given to the person providing the tip.
Constable Anderson notes that in some special cases, the Halton Police will offer a reward for information on cases, including an unsolved murder in Oakville.
Public appeal for information in regards to unsolved homicide in 1984 in Oakville. Reward offered.
