A local dog rescue is holding an auction to raise funds.
Fur-ever Able Dog Rescue and Rehab takes in dogs and finds proper homes for them. They even pay for the surgeries of dogs with medical issues.
Founder Ashley Andrews says this auction is to help them continue to do what they do best.
myFM News wrote an article on the launch of Fur-Ever Able Dog Rescue and Rehab just before the pandemic began. You can read that story here, which dives into the work the organization does with disabled dogs.
Regarding the auction, Andrews says that because this whole operation is being run on a volunteer basis, the money needs to come from somewhere.
Recently, Ashley’s husband, Jason, and their two boys, along with their neighbour, rented an RV and drove across Ontario. They were meeting with a partner of theirs that had rescued a group of dogs off of a reserve. Ashley says the dogs had been birthed under a porch in minus eight degree weather. They had been essentially feral, with Andrews calling the conditions a “nightmare.”
The trip took a total of 29-hours, with Jason driving to Thunder Bay and back. The group had rescued 29 dogs in a rented RV that Ashley says they took “pretty good care of, all things considered.”
2020 hasn’t been an easy year for a group that rescues dogs out of pocket. Andrews says, fortunately, they’ve had a lot of supporters and friends that have given all that they can to help treat for the dogs. It’s been hard because they have had a lot of people looking to adopt their dogs because of the pandemic. Andrews refers to this as people wanting ‘COVID dogs’. That kind of idea doesn’t sit well with her.
The Fur-ever Able Dog Rescue and Rehab Mini Christmas auction is being done entirely through Facebook. They’ve launched a special Facebook group to help limit the bidders to people wanting to actually pay what they bid (Andrews says they’ve had issues in the past with people bidding high and not paying). If you’re interested, you can join the group here!
The auction kicked off earlier this week. It will run until Sunday, December 6th, closing at 8:00 p.m..

There’s also a separate Facebook group that you can join here.
