Milton residents now know who will be challenging MPP Parm Gill in the next provincial election.
Last week, Town Councillor Sameera Ali was named the Ontario Liberal Party candidate for Milton.
She says the moment she found out that she had won the candidacy was rewarding.
There was an anonymous online campaign that was run against Ali following her announcement of running for the position. In the past, Ali had reportedly supported the Conservative Party. The campaign featured daily mass tweets centered around reminding residents of Ali’s apparent past affiliation. She says it’s unfortunate that someone, or some people, had decided to live in the past and focus so negatively on her volunteer work.
Ali adds that she has shown up when needed and when it matters most, and that should reflect her views.
As of writing, one major Twitter account (@Kramer48737529) that was vocally against Ali no longer exists.
There were some concerns about her role as a Councillor being up-in-the-air when her victory was announced. Ali says, until the election, she’s not going anywhere.
Pending any surprises, the next provincial election will be in 2022, a few months before the municipal election. Ali will challenge Conservative MPP Parm Gill, as well as candidates from the NDP and Green Party, and any Independent Parties.
Ali explains what she would do if she were to be named the MPP for Milton.
Ali says she is honoured and humbled to be the Ontario Liberal Party candidate for Milton. She stresses that she will work to be a strong ally who will take the same work ethic that she has had as a Councillor and put it towards being the strongest voice at Queen’s Park, should she win the provincial election.
