The 2019-2020 UCI Track Cycling World Cup and the 2020 UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships are coming to the Milton Velodrome.
myFM spoke with three-time Olympian and Member of the Board of Directors for Cycling Canada, Curt Harnett.
He says he is excited for both events – but is particularly excited for the Para-Cycling Track Championships.
These athletes will be vying to compete in the Olympics in Tokyo this summer.
Harnett says the cheers of Canadians will resonate with them as they continue on their journey to Tokyo.
The 2019-2020 UCI Track Cycling World Cup starts on Friday, January 24th at 7:00 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m. on Sunday, January 26th.
At the World Cup they will have concessions, local beer stands and an opportunity to check out top brands in the expo area. They also are have meet the athlete sessions and a school program that happens on the Friday before the world cup where they bring 1500 students in the region to experience everything.
2020 UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships starts on Thursday, January 30th at 7:00 p.m. and goes until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 2nd.
Harnett believes that Miltonians will walk away from the Para-Cycling Track Championships inspired by what paralympic athletes are able to accomplish; especially after having the comparison of the World Cup the weekend before.
Harnett says that it is critical for them to expand the awareness of paralympic sport and raise the profile of it so that others see the the value of a paralympic medal as a comparable accomplishment to winning an Olympic medal.
