We are now less than two weeks out from the federal election.
Milton is being split in half to create two separate ridings this time around. ‘Milton East’ will pair with ‘Halton Hills South’ for one of them, and the other will see ‘Milton West’ pair with ‘Burlington North’. Read more on the new ridings here.
Leading up to the big day, we’re reaching out and interviewing local candidates to hear what they have to say on a number of topics.
Kristina Tesser Derksen is the Town Councillor for Milton’s Ward 1. She’s also the candidate for the Liberal Party of Canada for the Milton East-Halton Hills South riding.
Here’s our interview:
Audio PlayerINT – Well, we just did this a couple months ago for the provincial election, but why don’t you share with me an elevator pitch for your platform – what are the Liberal Party’s priorities and what are your priorities?
Audio PlayerINT – We’ll get to the tariffs in just a second, but I want to touch on affordability. Every Miltonian is dealing with the high cost of living in the area. What can the federal government do to improve the cost of living – whether it’s housing, groceries or anything else?
Audio PlayerINT – It seems “tariff” will be a shoe-in for Word of the Year for 2025, and it’s only April. Everyone’s trying their best to buy local – to buy Canadian. You’ve touched pretty heavily on tariffs, already. If you haven’t any other thoughts on tariffs, now’s the time. How should Canada handle the ongoing trade war with the US?
Audio PlayerINT – Because we did a similar interview a couple months ago in the provincial election, you’re pretty familiar with this next question. Back then, we touched on the province’s role in helping with local environmental issues – specifically the CN Intermodal Hub and the Campbellville Quarry. However, I know the federal government plays a big role in these efforts, primarily the Environmental Minister Jonathan Wilkinson. So, do you plan on helping residents fight back against these concerns, should you be named one of the next two MPs serving the Milton area?
Audio PlayerINT – The next one is the final one – and it’s open ended on your behalf. Is there anything you’d like to discuss that we haven’t addressed? Any topics, concerns, issues, queries – the floor is yours.
