A new program is being launched in Milton that will require Additional Residential Units (ARUs) to be registered.
ARUs are self-contained living spaces with a kitchen, sleeping area, and bathroom—such as basement apartments, granny flats, and garden suites. Residents must register their new or existing units in person at Town Hall or online, with a one-time registration fee of $340 per unit. Those looking to build an ARU must also obtain a building permit and meet specific town requirements.
This initiative is expected to help Fire and Rescue Services access critical emergency response information while ensuring all ARUs comply with municipal regulations and zoning by-laws. It follows Milton Town Council’s June 2024 decision to expand ARUs in urban areas, aimed at increasing affordable housing options. Rural ARUs are still under review, with public meetings planned for later this year.
It officially takes effect on Tuesday, April 1st.
