Local crews work on snow during a storm
Milton’s Council has taken a proactive step in improving winter maintenance services by unanimously passing a motion focused on reviewing and enhancing the town’s snow removal efforts.
The motion, introduced by Ward 3 Town Councillor Adil Khalqi, was supported by the other three Town Councillors, all four Regional Councillors, and Mayor Gord Krantz during the March 17th council meeting.
It calls for a comprehensive post-mortem review of the 2024/2025 Winter Control program, which includes services such as snow removal on regional roads, sidewalks, and school routes, as well as the Windrow Removal Program for seniors and individuals with disabilities. Town staff will assess what worked well, identify areas for improvement, and present recommendations to council by the end of the second quarter in 2025. The findings will help inform the 2026 Operating Budget and potential enhancements to Milton’s snow removal services.
A key component of the motion is the consideration of a new “Snow Buddy Program,” a volunteer-based initiative aimed at assisting residents in need with snow removal on their properties. This program, if implemented, would be coordinated by the Town of Milton or another suitable agency to ensure timely assistance for those who require help during the winter months.
“The Snow Buddy Program is a practical way to further support our residents, especially those who may face difficulties with snow removal,” says Councillor Khalqi. “By connecting volunteers with residents in need, we not only provide essential help but also build stronger community bonds. This is also a great way to get youth involved, particularly those in high school, to help them earn volunteer hours.”
Residents can expect further updates as town staff conducts its review and explores new ways to improve snow removal services in the community.
