Milton Sports Centre (2020)
A lack of participation is affecting local debates ahead of the 2025 Provincial Election.
We’re told that a pair of public forums that were scheduled ahead of the Thursday, February 27th election have been cancelled due to a lack of candidates willing to participate. One of those forums was scheduled to take place at the Milton Sports Centre on Tuesday, February 18th.
We’ve reached out to all five announced Milton candidates for statements on the cancellations.
Ontario Liberal Party candidate Kristina Tesser Derksen says she was looking forward to meeting with the public ahead of the election.
“I really look forward to meeting my community in public forums. Public Debates and All Candidates’ Meetings are great opportunities for a candidate to get their message out to a large number of people, take questions, and defend their platforms. It’s a vital part of the election process, in my opinion. I had confirmed my attendance at both scheduled forums, and was looking forward to meeting with the other candidates and answering voters’ questions in these public forums. My thanks and gratitude go out to the organizations that put the time and effort into planning these. I appreciate them, and so does the community.”
NDP candidate Katherine-Anne Cirlincione says the public needs these kinds of events.
“Although I have had to continue working during both my 2022 campaign and the current one, I make every effort to attend as many public forums as possible. I was particularly excited to attend the forum hosted by the CFUW as I did in 2022. What is truly disappointing, however, hard-working Miltonians cannot rely on their elected representative to engage in dialogue with them and make time for these important debates. Unfortunately, this has been a consistent pattern with the Conservative Party, and Milton deserves better.”
If any events are rescheduled or announced leading up to the big day, we’ll let you know.
