The Ontario government is increasing its investment in the Skills Development Fund (SDF) Training Stream by $100 million, bringing the total funding to $1.5 billion.
This initiative aims to provide workers in industries like manufacturing, construction, and skilled trades with the training needed to secure better jobs and strengthen Ontario’s economy, especially amid potential U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. Trade with the U.S. supports one in five Ontario jobs and accounts for $400 billion in annual merchandise exchange, making workforce development critical. The additional funding will expand support for projects in industries expected to grow or face challenges from economic pressures.
“Under Premier Ford, we have made unprecedented investments in our incredible workers, and today’s investment builds on that record,” says David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “We will defend our achievements against economic threats and build up an even stronger and more resilient Ontario. By investing in training, we stand with Ontario businesses, workers, families, unions, and communities.”
Since 2021, the SDF has helped train over one million workers for in-demand careers across the province, ensuring Ontario’s workforce remains competitive in a changing global market.
