Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has added eight new MPs to his cabinet in a shuffle aimed at filling gaps left by those not seeking re-election.
The new members include Ruby Sahota (Brampton), Joanne Thompson (St. John’s), Élisabeth Brière (Sherbrooke), Rachel Bendayan (Montreal), Terry
Duguid (Winnipeg), Nate Erskine-Smith (Toronto), David McGuinty (Ottawa), and Darren Fisher (Nova Scotia).
McGuinty will take over as Public Safety Minister, while Bendayan becomes Minister of Official Languages and Associate Minister of Public Safety.
Sahota will lead the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, and Thompson will handle the seniors portfolio.
This shuffle comes ahead of next year’s election and follows the surprise departure of Chrystia Freeland as Finance Minister.
Dominic LeBlanc, who is the current public safety minister and also leads intergovernmental affairs, was named by Trudeau as the new finance minister on
Monday.
