The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is about to have a brand new police station just down the road.
On Wednesday, May 8th, the HRPS and Halton Region announced that they have broken ground on the new facility. It will be located in Hornby, within Halton Hills.
With shovels in hand, HRPS Chief Stephen Tanner, Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr, Halton Police Board Chair Jeff Knoll, Halton Hills Mayor Ann Lawlor, and Milton Mayor Gordon Krantz officially signalled the start of construction on the new, 66,000 square-foot police station. The new station will support the delivery of policing services to the residents of Halton Hills and Milton communities beginning in 2026.
“Breaking ground on our new 1 District Station is a tremendous moment, one that has been years in the making,” says Chief Stephen Tanner, Halton Regional Police Service. “With the incredible growth in Milton and Halton Hills projected to continue, the need for a modern facility that reflects the unique and evolving needs of Halton Police and the community we serve is evident. To support our continuous work to enhance programs and services, our buildings must respect the broader cultural landscape in which we operate, foster our core values of teamwork and inclusivity, and place people first. We look forward to welcoming our team and the broader community to this new Station in 2026.”
The new 1 District facility will be situated on 5.25 acres located near the intersection of Steeles Avenue and Sixth Line South in Halton Hills, just north of Highway 401.
The new facility will replace 1 District’s 12 Division Police Station, located at 490 Childs Drive in Milton, which was built in 1997. The age of the Milton station, combined with population growth in Halton Hills and Milton, have resulted in the HRPS outgrowing the facility. In 2023, the Halton Police Board approved a larger, more modern police station to ensure the HRPS can continue to meet the needs of these communities in the future.
“Today’s groundbreaking is an exciting occasion for all of us in Milton,” says Milton Mayor Gord Krantz. “It’s inspiring to see Halton Regional Police Service grow and evolve, like Milton, while remaining committed to delivering outstanding community services. This modern and expanded facility will help Milton remain a vibrant, inclusive and welcoming community where residents and businesses can thrive.”
The new station will be equipped to accommodate 390 members and will be home to 1 District Operations, one of three Halton Regional Police Service Collision Reporting Centres, and prisoner lock-up space. The station will also feature leading-edge systems, including rooftop solar panels, which will measurably reduce electrical consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
During and after construction, members of the public should expect no impact to police services in Milton or Halton Hills. The current 1 District (12 Division) will remain open until the new facility is completed, after which time the building will be given back to the Halton Region.
To support the 1 District project and provide new access to Hornby Park, Halton Region will be extending Hornby Road south of Steeles Avenue to the edge of the park. This extension, when fully completed, will include new streetlights, a multi-use path and boulevard landscaping. Local residents will experience minor construction-related impacts during construction.
This project received $28,970 in funding for a feasibility study from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund. The Green Municipal Fund is a $1.65 billion program funded by the Federal Government that supports local sustainability projects that help municipalities adopt climate solutions.
