Reports of someone carrying a gun at the Oakville Sheridan College campus caused quite the stir on Tuesday.
The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) says the school was placed into lockdown sometime before 3:14 p.m. Many residents online reported seeing officers with large weapons in the area as people were asked to avoid going near the investigation.
By 3:21 p.m., the suspect was taken into police custody, with no ongoing threat to the community.
The Special Investigations Unit has been called in to take over the investigation, which only happens when, “… the circumstances around serious injuries, allegations of sexual assault, firearm discharges at persons, and deaths in cases [involve] officials.” The SIU adds that it investigates, “all instances where an official discharged a firearm at a person, whether or not the person died or was seriously injured.”
The HRPS are no longer allowed to answer questions on the investigation. A news release from the SIU has not been released yet, but is expected. We’ll update you if/when that is released.
Suspect in custody. Lockdown currently being lifted. No known ongoing threat to public safety at this time. Updates to follow as appropriate.
