Councillor Adil Khalqi as he defends amendment to lower fee
The Town of Milton is looking to help residents when it comes to wildlife reports.
Town Council passed the motion during the Monday, July 17th meeting. It was brought forward by Regional Councillors Colin Best and Rick Malboeuf. As per the agenda, this motion will continue the partnership with the Town’s current wildlife service provider. Council also approved a single source award to Omega Canine Control in the estimated amount of $63,876 to “provide wildlife response services on public property for a one year period from August 1st, 2023 to July 31st, 2024, with an option to renew for a second year.” Read the full motion here.
Anyone who calls the Town about any wildlife in distress on private property will receive support. Starting in August, the new service will come with a $50 fee. Residents will be notified of the fee during calls prior to the service being deployed. The fee was originally set at $240, but the number was lowered at the request of Town Councillor Adil Khalqi, seconded by Councillor Best. Khalqi was concerned with affordability, saying that “someone could be calling about a dead goose on their lawn… that’d still cost them $240.” The fee will be reviewed by Members of Council in six months’ time.
Residents can call the Municipal Law Enforcement at 905-878-7252 ext. 2322 or contact them through the Town’s website, to have Animal Services Officers respond to calls for wildlife on private property.
The response time for wildlife requests on private property may be up to 72 hours depending on the nature of the request. Any requests received outside of regular business hours will be addressed the following business day.
