A local boy is getting set to represent Ontario in a national flag football tournament.
JJ Robinson and the boys on the DawkSports Cowboys will be one of two teams representing Ontario in Nova Scotia. As the quarterback, he’s happy to lead the team to a chance at national glory.
Like most kids, Robinson says he got his love of football from his dad. They’ve been watching the Indianapolis Colts and cheering for players like Shaquille Leonard and are looking forward to what might come of their young first round pick in Anthony Richardson. It’s this love of football that led Robinson to look for ways of playing. He says that started with training in and around Milton, before taking his skills to the Peel Panthers and his local high school team.
He just likes ‘ball, though. So much so that he’s also taken to flag football, and that will take him out of the province for the first time in his life.
Some of his Panthers teammates are on this national-contending team. Robinson says it’s great to play alongside friends because it helps you improve together. He’s also enjoyed the chance to meet new players and teammates.
As of one two teams representing Ontario, the soon-to-be grade ten student says they had to play in a qualifying tournament in Georgetown to advance. That means they’re familiar with the other team, and have a few tricks up their sleeves.
The U16 National Championships for flag football will take place on the fields of Antigonish, Nova Scotia at St. Francis Xavier University. The games will run from Sunday, July 30th to Wednesday, August 2nd. It’ll be a busy few days for the boys, who won’t have much time for site-seeing. Robinson’s father Jordan, however, is excited to try the seafood and see the sites… The few benefits of having a child in youth sports!
Good luck to the DawkSports Cowboys!
