The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) says that, despite constant reminders, several motorists around Milton and Halton Hills continue to pass school buses when it’s illegal to do so.
In a tweet, the HRPS says they have received several reports of drivers passing school buses on multiple lane highways. This when the buses are stopped with lights flashing and the stop sign out. The tweet adds that it’s only allowed when their is a median that separate the sides of the road, like Highway 401.
According to the province:
“If you don’t stop, you can be fined $400 to $2,000 and receive six demerit points for a first offence. If you are convicted a second time within five years, the penalty is a fine of $1,000 to $4,000 and six demerit points. You could also go to jail for up to six months.“
I have received calls relating to stopping for school busses on multiple lane highways. With red lights flashing drivers shall stop before reaching the bus and shall not proceed until the bus moves or lights have stopped flashing. A median is the only exception. ^RD#1DRUSgt pic.twitter.com/WHR2uWOPxu
