We have an orange crosswalk in Milton!
On Monday, June 13th, the Town of Milton unveiled their new orange crosswalk, calling it a “visual symbol of the strength and courage of residential school survivors. The crosswalk serves as a commemoration of the victims, their families, and communities.”
During this unveiling, participants and viewers heard from Indigenous voices in the community who reflected on the legacy of residential schools and displayed the culture, traditions and ceremony that has been passed on from generation to generation. Stories of strength, healing and resilience were also shared through song and poems.

“This orange crosswalk is a significant symbol in Milton that acknowledges the strength and survival of residential school survivors, and honours the victims, their families and communities,” says Milton Mayor Gordon Krantz. “Each time I drive by or walk the crosswalk I am reminded of the role I play as an elected official, the role we individually play, and the role as a community that we have to truth and reconciliation.”
Students, members of Milton’s Town Council, community members, and many of the Town’s partners, including Halton Region, Halton Regional Police Services, School Boards, Downtown Milton BIA, and businesses were in attendance to show their support and commitment to reconciliation.
“Learning about the impacts of the Residential Schools is everyone’s responsibility,” says Sherry Saevil of Grandmother’s Voice and Milton community member.
The orange crosswalk can be found at the intersection of Mill Street and Martin Street.
