The FM 101 Milton Pet of the Week is Mini!
The miniature schnauzer is dealing with a cleft lip and a cleft palate. She was also born with one eye, which has affected her development so far. She’s been looked after by Milton’s Fur-Ever Able Dog Rescue since she was one-day old. Founder Ashley Andrews says Mini has grown well but still needs surgery.
She adds that Mini’s lip is more of a cosmetic fix, so she won’t require surgery for that issue.
Andrews says she first received the call regarding Mini while she was at her in-laws in Haliburton. Mini was then rushed to Andrews at just one-day old where she was immediately placed in care. From day one to adoption, Andrews says the general estimated cost for care for one of their animals is around $3000. That covers food and specialized diet, as well as medical check-ups and surgeries.
The organization focuses on dogs in tough situations and more specifically, dogs dealing with disabilities. They mostly take on dogs and puppies with cleft palate issues. Andrews will raise them and look after their surgeries. When they’re ready, the dogs will then be put up for adoption. She describes the dogs they take in as ones that are likely up for euthanasia otherwise.
Mini is currently in foster care with a young couple looking after her and her sister. The goal is eventually adoption. If you’re interested, you can check the Fur-Ever Able adoption page, which also includes Lily Hound, Wally, Buttercup and Toby! The page also has a detailed outline on their adoption process.
Looking to foster? Josie could use your help.
