Get to know Myla!
She’s believed to be a Mastiff-Shar Pei mix, and she is our FM 101 Milton Pet of the Week. Our friends at Fur- Ever Able Dog Rescue are currently looking after Myla at Bekkers. To be as blunt as possible, Myla has had a hard life, which has led to some behaviour issues. Volunteer Jason explains:
All that aside, Myla is an absolute sweetheart. She just needs someone to take a chance on her. Furever Able Founder Ashley Andrews says that Myla’s ideal living situation would be a single adult male who is willing to listen and train, and able to handle her size and strength. Jason adds that Myla was previously twice in foster care. She was then adopted, but quickly returned after the certain criteria for proper care of Myla’s needs were ignored (Myla has a fear of being tethered). Jason says she fled from the owner’s backyard, and bit at a young boy – but no bite occurred.
Myla is believed to be about four years old. She’s fully grown but still shows puppy tendencies, and gets the ‘zoomies’ pretty often still. She likes to run and play – a lot.
On walks, she needs to be tight to the person walking her, otherwise she will pull quickly. While she appears friendly to other dogs when on walks, she will display aggressive tendencies when close. That means whoever takes her in will need to be attentive at all times on walks. In the house, she listens very well. Jason says that if she is allowed to free roam (at a park, for example) or if the leash is too loose on a walk then her more aggressive tendencies become apparent.
Jason describes Myla as a couch potato when around someone she trusts; willing to relax and chill for the day. She just needs the right fit.
Typically, Fur-Ever Able will look for three-five potential candidates who seem like the best fit for the animal. Applicants will be analyzed, with the top ones being allowed to meet the dog. Ashley stresses that if the fit isn’t right, the adoption won’t happen. They want to make sure the animal is going to the best home possible.
With Myla and her situation, it’s a little different. She’s been at the kennel for about four months now, so Fur- Ever Able is looking to find a new foster home for her. The goal would be eventual adoption after additional training takes place and she gets used to more frequent human interaction.
The organization focuses on dogs in tough situations – such as Myla with her behaviour issues and hard upbringing – and more specifically, dogs dealing with disabilities. They mostly take on dogs and puppies with cleft palate issues. Andrews will raise them and look after their surgeries. When they’re ready, the dogs will then be put up for adoption. She describes the dogs they take in as ones that are likely up for euthanasia otherwise.
If you’d like to know more about Myla, you can call Ashley directly at 416-659-5763, message her through Facebook and Instagram or via email at FureverAble@hotmail.com. The vetting process for Myla will be done with Jason directly since he has worked the most with her. If you’re interested in adopting another dog, you can check the Fur-Ever Able adoption page, which includes Chong, Freddy, Josie, and Zeus! The page also has a detailed outline on their adoption process.
Pet of the Week will return next week! If you are a rescue or animal shelter and would like to be featured, reach out at Cameron.Wilkinson@LocalRadio.ca. We’re hoping to help connect your pets in need (dogs, cats, rabbits, lizards, fish, birds, etc.) with their future forever homes.
