Each Thursday, FM 101 Milton will be introducing readers and listeners to a new pet that is up for adoption.
We’re currently partnering with our friends at Fur-Ever Able Dog Rescue. Our first Pet of the Week is Josie, a 120 lbs Bull Mastiff mix.
Longtime readers may remember a story that we did with Fur-Ever Able that had them drive up to Manitoba to rescue a dog and her puppies who were all living on a reserve. That was Josie, and her puppies have since grown up. Affectionately known as ‘Mama’, Josie has gone from eating moldy scraps to being a big lapdog.
Fur-Ever Able Founder Ashley Andrews breaks down her loveable personality.
Josie is dealing with some eye issues. It’s called ‘cherry eye’ and Josie has recently had surgery to repair both eyes. One of the two is still in pretty bad shape, as Andrews says the operations do have a high failure rate. That said, she will go in for another procedure soon and Andrews is hopeful that the issue will be fixed.
She’s a big dog. Andrews estimates that she’s about 120 lbs now, 40 lbs heavier than what she was when they found her in Manitoba. She says Josie was covered in bug bites, riddled with infections, and thin to the point of bones being visible against her skin.
Josie isn’t for every family. With her size, it’s best for either experienced dog owners or families with teenagers to adopt her.
It’s worth noting that she is spayed, so that procedure is already taken care of.
Fur-Ever Able says they will look for three-five potential candidates who seem like the best fit for her. Applicants will be analyzed, with the top ones being allowed to meet Josie. Andrews stresses that if the fit isn’t right, she won’t be adopted. They want to make sure Josie is going to the best home possible.
The organization focuses on dogs in tough situations – such as Josie being abandoned with puppies – and more specifically, dogs dealing with disabilities. They mostly take on dogs and puppies with cleft palate issues. Andrews will raise them and look after their surgeries. When they’re ready, the dogs will then be put up for adoption.
If you’d like to know more about Josie, including potentially adopting her, you can check out her profile here. The page also has a detailed outline on their adoption process.
Pet of the Week will return next week! If you are a rescue or animal shelter and would like to be featured, reach out at Cameron.Wilkinson@LocalRadio.ca. We’re hoping to help connect your pets in need (dogs, cats, rabbits, lizards, fish, birds, etc.) with their future forever homes.
