So, here we are.
A federal election has been called for September 20th. It’s been less than two years since Canadians went to the polls to vote the Liberal government back into office, this time in a minority government. The Trudeau government is hoping to gain more seats, and move back into a majority government.
As it stands, Milton currently has just two official candidates to choose from:
- The incumbent Milton MP, Adam van Koeverden, for the Liberal Party; and,
- the freshly named candidate for the Conservatives, Nadeem Akbar.
We first spoke with Akbar when he was named to the position in the winter. Listen to his interview here. Akbar has since been a part of a controversial decision to vote out former Deputy Leader of the Opposition and previous Milton MP, Lisa Raitt, from the local riding association.
Current Milton MP Adam van Koeverden (Liberal) won the Milton riding in the 2019 federal election with 51.75% of the vote. Then incumbent MP Lisa Raitt (Conservative) received 36.13% of the vote. NDP candidate Farina Hassan had 6.45%, Green Party candidate Eleanor Hayward received 4.64% of the vote, and PPC candidate Percy Dastur received 1.03%.
We’ll see if any of the other candidates will run locally.
