The Town of Milton is hoping to increase safety around stormwater management ponds.
With summer in full swing, the Town has installed new safety signs around the ponds in our community. The new signs outline the purpose of the ponds, how they work and provide safety tips.
Residents are reminded not to swim, fish, boat or litter in stormwater management ponds. Community members are welcome to enjoy the scenery and passive activities such as walking and bird watching.
This was a big topic at a Milton Town Council meeting earlier in the year. The notice was brought forward following the death of a young boy in Milton drowned in the pond near Reece Court.
In January, the Town of Milton joined forces with other municipalities and organizations, such as the Milton Fire Department, to launch an ice-safety campaign.
A stormwater management pond is engineered infrastructure built to collect and treat rainfall and surface water runoff. The ponds are usually found in neighbourhoods, where stormwater can easily be collected and treated. They protect the natural environment from contaminants and erosion and help reduce flooding.
