Rural Milton is getting help to improve its internet service.
In an announcement by Milton MP Adam van Koeverden, $441,200 will be given to Bell Canada to provide more reliable internet. Bell will be adding $1,286,200 as well.
The Senior Vice President, Access Engineering and Deployment at Bell Canada, Bruce Furlong, gave the following statement:
“Access to high-speed broadband networks will be a driver of not only Canada’s recovery from COVID-19 but also future social and economic prosperity, and Bell has committed to further accelerating our industry-leading capital investment plan over the next two years to connect even more communities across the country. We’re proud to invest $1,286,200 in partnership with the Government of Canada to provide more than 750 rural Ontario households with access to the fastest fibre home Internet speeds available.”
MP van Koeverden says this is a local issue that he’s been looking to fix.
The project was approved within five months of the formal launch of the $1.75-billion Universal Broadband Fund. Projects funded under the UBF, as well as through other public and private investments, will help connect 98% of Canadians to high-speed Internet by 2026 and achieve the national target of 100% connectivity by 2030.
MP van Koeverden says the pandemic has shown just how important reliable internet can be.
The money will help 756 underserved homes in communities surrounding Milton. That includes: Ashgrove, Campbellville, Carlisle, Cedar Springs, Freelton, Hornby, Morriston, Waterdown and other areas just outside Milton.
