Are people using Milton residences as party locations?
The Town of Milton is looking to better regulate short term rental units for this exact reason. The Town Councillor for Ward 2, John Challinor, brought the notice of a motion to the most recent Town Council meeting. He says people have been renting out local homes to people through sites like ‘Airbnb’. These short term tenants then hold parties, and nearby neighbours are dealing with the noise that ensues.
Audio PlayerAs Councillor Challinor mentions, this was an apparent issue across rural Milton all summer. That’d be frustrating for residents during any normal summer; but in 2020, that means people are gathering in large groups during a pandemic.
He says complaints have included a lack of sleep.
Audio PlayerCouncillor Challinor adds that he does not have an issue with short term rentals in Milton. He, Council, and Staff understand the need and importance of these kinds of properties. The big issue is that, whether it is in an urban or rural setting, noise and property complaints should be taken seriously. Challinor says that without proper legislation in-place, it’s “kind of like the ‘Wild, Wild West’ out there.”
The motion aimed at companies like ‘Airbnb’ is expected to return to Council. If approved by Council, the motion will then be referred to staff. They will research what other municipalities have put in-place to mandate and regulate short term rentals. Once the best practices are written up, the bylaws will be put back in front of Council for approval.
The whole process is expected to take a few months, and may not be finalized until the new year, says Challinor.
