Last week inmates at the Maplehurst Correctional Complex participated in a three-day hunger strike in tandem with similar protests that have taken place at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre and the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay.
Stephen Warner, the spokesperson for the Solicitor General (Sylvia Jones), confirms the strike took place and has since ended.
In a statement, Jones says the government is investing more than $500 million over five years to transform correctional facilities across the province.
Adding that the funding will ensure the safety and security of frontline staff and will reduce the staffing shortages that have occurred due to the pandemic.
She says this investment will allow correctional facilities the ability to hire more than 500 staff to address mental health and addiction issues in the system.
The funding will also be used to modernize infrastructure, address overcrowding, and will improve services.
