BackUp Buddy is an free app launched by the Halton Police that helps their members, family members and retirees.
The app tackles topics such as anger, post traumatic stress, depression, self harm, alcohol and substance abuse and suicide.
Staff Sergeant, John Karcz, says it is the first of its kind in Canada.
Staff Sergeant Karcz says they encourage their officers to use it while responding to calls if there is someone in the public in need of help.
Karcz goes over some of the resources featured in the app.
Karcz, talks about what he considers to be the best part of the app.
He also says the app has been well received by officers.
While Staff Sergeant Karcz, was unable to give us statistics on how many staff they know struggle with their mental health, he did reflect on the trauma first responders are faced with.
Saying that this trauma can sneak up on an officer and have a negative impact mentally, emotionally and physically.
This app is their push towards strengthening and supporting their membership’s mental health and wellbeing.
